How can you tell the hero rescue dog is happy to be home when he can't smile?
That tail, that (always) 'happy boy' tap, tap, tap.
Blue has always been a great nurse maid to her friends, so we thought she'd be good with Toby. But, what about the cats? Will they know? How will they react? How will Toby react?
Toby and Blue that just finally become friends before the rattlesnake bites. So, we thought she'd do fine with Toby but she was super excited to have her buddy home! She knew, of course, that he was needing to heal and sniffed every hurt spot, including every inch of the bruising, which covered almost his entire under side and neck.
(Back Story about the cats: Toby was never allowed alone with the cats but had interacted with the cats without issue. However, in June, he chased Coal across the yard for the first and only time when we had a different rattlesnake at my garden area and chaos hit the fan. Coal went up a tree - he climbs everything - and all was fine but Toby 'had fun' and wanted to play again. Ugh. So, it became the game we worked hard to withdraw from. Before the snake bites in September, he was no longer chasing the cats but still thought about it, lol, and Millie was wanting to check him out but kept a safe distance. They were still never left alone together.)
So, as soon as we got Toby in the door, he wanted to lay down in the floor. Millie immediately came to check him out. He saw her but did nothing. Well, actually, he started shivering. We now realize that was his energy release mechanism, along with just being cold, lol. That was the desensitizing turning point with them, though. Millie started cautiously coming closer and Toby started shivering less when she did. Updated to add that they are now the silliest "Odd Couple" you may ever meet. And, Coal tries to ignore Toby, lol, and other than a greeting sniff, it pretty much is mutual.
We are so blessed to have such an amazing "pet" (ha) family. Maybe next Christmas we can get all four in the Christmas Picture. Stay tuned for that one, lol. Do you have a cat/dog couple in your family? Tell me about 'em.
